The Washington Internship Institute is an educational nonprofit organization dedicated to preparing college students and recent graduates for their future through substantive internships in Washington, D.C. During a semester or summer in Washington, DC, you will learn about yourself and your field while enjoying the excitement of our nation’s capital. The DC Experience
As a WII student, you live in a diverse, international atmosphere where cultural and social opportunities abound. Only in DC can you rub elbows with Congressional leaders, tour the art collection of the French Embassy, view the monuments while sailing on the Potomac River and explore the vibrant, exciting nightlife.
Academic quality
WII employs the principles of experiential learning to create a structured academic environment with seminars, substantive internships, and guided reflection. We are the only internship program that requires all students to take the “
Internship Seminar – Bridging Theory and Practice,
” which complements the internship. In addition, all WII faculty have earned doctorates, held faculty rank at an accredited university, and taught at the undergraduate level.
Individualized, personal attention
Because of our small size, we interact with all students personally and individually throughout their time in Washington. Simply put, we know every student and keep in close touch with them before, during, and after their participation in the program. Key administrators teach the students every semester.

Strong international focus
Over the past decade, more than one-third of our student body has been made up of international students. Students from the U.S. and abroad live and study together, enhancing their growth and promoting cultural understanding.
Substantive opportunities for all majors
WII’s students intern four days per week, full-time, thereby gaining greater professional experience than in other programs. Internship placement is centered around each student’s individual interests and professional goals. From environmental studies to business to political science, we work with students from all academic disciplines.
The “Capital Experience”
internship program welcomes all majors and allows students the widest latitude in choosing the internship that best fits their interests. For example, communications majors have interned with media outlets; economics majors have interned with think tanks; pre-law students have interned in the legal system. An elective class complements their internship and makes Washington, DC their classroom.
Our distinctive "Embassy Scholars"
internship program gives students an opportunity unmatched in Washington: interning and doing substantive work at a host of international organizations. Previous students have interned at foreign embassies, nonprofit organizations and the State Department, while taking a “practical” International Relations course from a retired U.S. diplomat with extensive academic experience.
Our unique “Go Green!”
program is geared towards students with a passion for the environment. From environmental law to advocacy to research, Washington is host to many national environmental organizations. Potential internships include tracking national legislation for the Environmental Protection Agency, writing press releases for World Wildlife Fund, or researching energy issues for the Climate Institute.
