Why WII >> Academics

Academic Credit

Colleges and universities across the country have counted on WII to provide their students with a high-quality, academic internship program in Washington, DC.  Although WII does not award credit, most schools award a full semester’s credit to their students. Check with your advisor or contact WII for more information.

Our goal is to provide students with the practical liberal arts skills that will assist them in transitioning from their student life to their professional life. The WII student outcomes and corresponding learning components include:

Experiential Learning

Students engage in active learning through a quality internship experience. They spend 32 hours per week at the internship site, where they assume responsibilities similar to those of entry-level professionals.

High Achievement

Students set the stage for success by designing a Learning Plan that is reviewed twice by WII faculty before being signed by the Agency Sponsor. The Learning Plan includes six categories of learning goals: knowledge, professional, skills / technical, cultural, personal, and civic engagement.

Critical Inquiry

  • Organizational analysis
  • In-class activities and exercises
  • Reflective journals or weekly summaries
  • Critical incidents at the internship site that lead to inquiry and problem solving

Integrative Learning

  • Synthesis of learning through in-class discussions
  • Internship assignments, including research
  • Personal development
  • Future planning assignments

Oral and Written Communication Skills

  • Weekly written assignments
  • Three formal, in-class presentations
  • Writing assignments as part of the internship
  • Presentations at the internship site

Intercultural Awareness and Competence

  • Ethnic diversity of DC
  • International component of the WII student body (typically one-third international)
  • Diversity of the WII student body

Assessment is an integral part of WII’s programs.
Throughout the semester, we provide a number of opportunities for feedback and assessment, including:

  • On-going feedback from WII faculty
  • Mid-term assessment by the internship sponsor
  • Student’s own mid-term assessment
  • Final assessment by the internship sponsor
  • Portfolio of learning (capstone)
  • Reflective essay (capstone) and
  • Final evaluation by WII faculty.
