The Washington Internship Institute, an educational nonprofit organization, prepares college students and recent graduates for their future. During a semester or summer in Washington, DC, students learn about themselves and their fields through substantive internships, academic enrichment seminars, site visits, and shared housing. They become engaged and informed citizens and leaders who are equipped to make a difference in the world.

Since 1990 the Institute has educated thousands of future leaders by placing them in internships in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors. In 2005 IEL adopted the new identity Washington Internship Institute (WII) reflecting our mission and focus as a Washington, D.C. based internship organization.

Weekly academic seminars complement the learning that takes place at the internship site. These courses encourage students to reflect on their experiences, set goals, and explore discipline-based topics. Alumni frequently report that their semester in Washington significantly enhanced their learning and subsequently gave them an edge when they applied to graduate school or entered the job market.
WII offers several programs to choose from:
The Capital Experience, the Institute’s original internship program, offers vast placement options for participants with interests in all fields of study.
The Embassy Scholars program has targeted internationally focused placements in diplomacy, business, trade, development, and law.
The Go Green! program provides opportunities for students interested in environmental policy to get hands on experience working with policy makers as well as environmental organizations.
The Faculty Fellows program matches mid-career faculty with organizations in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors for semester-long professional sabbaticals in Washington, DC.

Additionally, the Institute has custom designed programs to meet the specific academic requirements of several universities. For more than a decade, satisfied university faculty and administrators have repeatedly referred students to the Institute.
The Institute has partnered with organizations abroad to provide customized internship programs. Since 1996 the Institute has worked with the International Business School (IBS) in Sweden and Shenandoah University to provide international marketing and journalism programs. The Institute has also partnered with the Foundation of Rio de la Plata (FURP) in Argentina, which nominates students chosen through a prestigious scholarship program. International students enrich the program and give all participants an opportunity to improve their cross-cultural skills. |
